The Quantum Thief by Hannu Rajaniemi
I saw this book on the new books shelf at my local library and since I was ready to try a brand new author, I read the inside cover. What grabbed my attention and made me check the book out was the comment that the book includes “a race of hyperadvanced humans who originated as an MMORPG guild.” Considering my interests, this sounded like a good fit for me. The book is the author’s debut novel, which can often make for a rough ride, but I was intrigued.
I’m going to have to give this book another try sometime later when I have more time to just sit and think through the concepts. It suffers from some odd pacing and sound-bite like sequences. The science in it is pretty high level. The author holds a PhD in string theory, so I was expecting that going into the book, but I found the science to be a bit too distracting. I was also expecting more of a Stainless Steel Rat type of heist story, while this is an exploration into alternate reality as much as it is a daring action ride.
The book is worth a second read-through later and I will certainly keep my eye on this author’s future offerings.
I’ve heard about this book! I was actually thinking of giving it a try for my attempt to get into new sci fi novels. But after reading this, it doesn’t seem like it’s something a noob to the genre should start off with, sounds very complex… I like science-y stuff, but physics is a whole different matter! 😛
By the way, I wanted to catch you on twitter, but since I’m commenting here now anyway, I wanted to let you know I started a book blog…since I know you’re into reading I thought you’d be interested: http://bibliosanctum.blogspot.com
I’m still sprucing it up before letting others know of it, I bloody hate setting up new blogs especially since I went with blogger this time and it took me forever to figure out all the customization options LOL… anyway, thought you might be interested, and if you like what you see feel free to follow 🙂
I’ll go check it out, thanks.
